Baillie back at City

4th July

City boss Gary Roberts has made his second signing of the summer by capturing the services of highly rated Heybridge Swifts midfielder Lewis Baillie. The left-sided player is no stranger to Milton Road, having spent a short spell as a first-team fringe player during the Graham Daniels era. Baillie had graduated from the youth team ranks and was, as now, a very good prospect. With the Swifts last season he ended an impressive season by being named Players-Player-of-the-Year. Baillie will link up with what now looks to be an exciting looking City midfield that already includes Rob Miller and Robbie Nightingale.

Miller signs

2nd June 2003

Cambridge City completed the transfer of midfielder Rob Miller over the weekend. He becomes manager Gary Roberts' first summer signing as he builds for the forthcoming season. Miller joins on a one-year contract and I have to say, from a supporters point of view, he seems to be the calibre of player we are looking for in order to strengthen the team to make sure we have a successful season in 2003/4 instead of the seemingly annual struggle. The signs are good, and it will be a pleasure to prove wrong the "know-nothings" from other clubs who are so quick to put the Lilywhites down as no-hopers. City are on the up, and the Roberts Renaissance starts here

City swoop for Miller?

Speculation is rife this weekend and it surrounds the possible signing of Bedford Town midfielder Rob Miller (pictured left). Miller was voted Player of the Year last season by both supporters and players and is very much the "fans favourite" at the New Eyrie. Despite this, the player has already been written off on the Bedford Town messageboard as being amongst other things "not that special". A classic case of Kings Lynnesque sour grapes from the bitter Bedford supporters. Miller is a left-sided midfielder and would certainly compliment the midfield players already at Milton Road and give the team some welcome balance down that left side. It also appears that 23 year-old Miller has a very good workrate, another aspect of his game that will appeal to the Milton Road faithful. Meanwhile there is no news, not even any rumours, concerning the Grantham trio of Gary Bull, Ray Ranshaw and Stuart Wilson and their possible switch to City. Amusingly, word has reached the Neanderthals at Welling that their new manager Paul Parker has expressed an interest in Bull. that is as good as the player being signed according to the scribblings on the Welling forum. I don't think this saga is finished yet.

Histon Football Club have continued in their quest to turn their second rate first team into a complete collection of City discards, with the signing of both Colin Vowden and Steve Holden this week. Many City fans, myself included, were disappointed to see Vowden on his way. The big centre-half , signed from Dover by former manager David Batch, had been a mainstay of the defence for much of the season. Along with some solid performances at the heart of the City backline, Vowden weighed in with some crucial goals this season, notably that delightful winner against the hated northern thugs from Stafford at Milton Road in December. He was also on the scoresheet against Folkestone and Grantham. Steve Holden had struggled to get into the team this season due mainly to some bad luck with injuries. Although sometimes prone to inclusion in the referee's notebook, no-one could ever doubt Holden's commitment to City over the years. He is a player that always gave 100% , the same can be said of Vowden.

Histon have gained two very good defenders who are sure to tighten up their defence as they go in search of an improbable promotion to the Premier Division. It could have been much worse I suppose, Colin and Steve could have been lured by those clowns from the Walks. I would have been even more gutted by that.
